first Human Library Event where we can ask questions.

What is Human Library

in the year 2000 in 

Copenhagen, Denmark 

. Readers can borrow human beings serving as open books.

.Allows people to have conversations they would not normally have had.

.Each pbook is a person in our society that have lived with prejudice, 

discrimination.

Human Library Event - Speak Your Mind: Conversations on Youth Mental Health

 

This October, join us at Azure Beach Library as we hold our first Human Library Event to celebrate Mental Health Month for Youth!

What is Mental Health Month?
Mental Health Month is celebrated in October every year and provides people with an opportunity to learn more about mental health and encourages them to seek help when they need it.

What is this event about?
In accordance with the rise of mental health cases affecting the youth today, Azure Beach Library has decided to hold a Human Library Event to help spread awareness on various mental health issues in today’s youth.

Partnering up with the Human Library Organisation, Azure Beach Library has invited 6 people (known as “Books” in this event) who have either lived experiences or are mental health experts in the following topics:
•    Anxiety
•    Depression
•    Body dysmorphia
•    Eating disorders
•    Schizophrenia
•    OCD

Young people coming to this event (those living with mental health issues, or friends and family of young people with mental health issues) will have the opportunity to “borrow” these Books and have a conversation with them in a safe, open and inclusive space.

Azure Beach Library hopes this event will challenge people’s views around mental health and erase negative stigma, as well as providing a safe space for the youth to seek help and access resources.

What is Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year is a day to celebrate of the arrival of spring and the beginning of new year on the lunisolar calendar. it is the most important holiday in China and it is also widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam and countries with a significant overseas Chinese population. While the official dates encompassing the holiday vary by culture, those celebrating consider it the time of year to reunite with immediate and extended family. 

What is a Human Library 

Human Library is an event where readers can borrow people serving as open living books and have conversations. Each book has their own story to tell.

The aim for the Human Library is to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue

Azure Beach will be running an event in partnership with the Human library Organisation. In the event there will be four Living books all from the same background each having a story to tell and share. Each conversation will last for 20 minutes group conversation

Refugee Stories Off The Page Human Library

Join us at Azure Beach Public Library's first Human Library Event to celebrate Refugee Week on Monday 17th June!

Have you ever wanted to have conversation with a book? 

Or have it answer a question as you read?

Come to our upcoming event to have a new library and reading experience. Our Human Library will come alive with real stories from refugees in our community as we celebrate cultural diversity and Refugee Week. 

The Human Library gives you the chance to "borrow" a human book and learn their stories beyond words on a page in a safe and open environment. Together you can share an honest and meaningful exchange without judgement or fear. 

The Refugee Stories Off The Page Human Library will engage and challenge participants, provide new perspectives and understanding, and connect our Azure Beach community.

Learning for Life: An Azure Beach Library Event

Learning doesn't stop at school! Azure Beach Public Library is proud to be hosting its first Human Library for Adult Learners Week. Rather than borrow a book, you can borrow an entire person to learn in a whole new way. A wide range of volunteers from diverse, underrepresented backgrounds have generously volunteered to tell their life stories, firsthand. And unlike a paper book, our human books never run out of pages.

Borrow a Living Library Book! - NAIDOC Week special event

The Human Library project is coming to Azure Beach Library!

Instead of borrowing a book, you can 'borrow' a human book for a conversation and a cuppa! Our inaugural living library takes place in NAIDOC week where you can chat with First Nations people about their life stories - tales of struggles and triumph over adversity.

Human Libraries seek to promote dialogue and encourage understanding between people who may not encounter each other in other ways in a warm and safe environment - like your local library!

It is free to participate but you will need to register via the link below.

"The ‘Rules for readers’are simple, respect the book, be curious, bring the book back on time and in the same condition it was given to you. Both parties have the right to end the loan at any time".

Come join us for a day of involved conversation with Queer Elders within the Azure Beach community!
Azure Beach is hosting a Human Library event under the banner of pride month! As such, we've chosen to highlight the lived experiences of the older queer members of our community.
Queer members of local communities are often under-represented in examinations of local history, largely owing to the oppressive and violent nature of this history. Because of this there's often a large emphasis on the progress that's been made, rather than the circumstances that called for change, and how those oppressed by them instigated that very change.
Azure Beach has scouted local Queer Elders within the community, and invite you to come and speak with them, learn from their experiences and examine the parallels between their lives and those of queer people today.
We actively encourage younger queer members of our community to attend, learn the history of both the queer and local community, and make connections with elders who you might otherwise never meet. 
No tickets are required, however we do encourage you to RSVP on the below google form, as numbers are limited.

Everyone Has a Story - A Human Library Event in Celebration of NAIDOC Week

Hosted by Azure Beach Public Library in celebration of NAIDOC Week.

Dating back over 60,000 years, Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have the oldest known culture in the world. They are the traditional custodians of this land and yet they are not recognised within the Australian constitution. Since colonisation from European settlers in 1788, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been oppressed and are still subjected to racism and discrimination in the modern-day.

​​The world has been severely affected by humanity’s continued existence on the planet. Climate issues like deforestation, global warming, loss of many species of wildlife future generations will only know from stories and pictures, loss of many species of flora replaced by buildings, parking lots, playgrounds, zoos etc. The Indigenous people have been habitants of Australia for over 65000 years,  widely accepted to have pre-dated European and American settlements, and have been working with the land by using the natural resources to make dwellings, find and prepare food, make clothing, weapons and teach the younger generation to do the same so that they can continue to live peacefully on their rightful lands and continue to care for the earth. This program will highlight their existing and continued importance, educate non-Indigenous people how to sustainably use the earth's natural resources to balance, educate and encourage the attendees. The human library event will strive to assist attendees to live life more sustainably and ethically using the skills from this event to consider and adapt their impact on the planet and appreciation for the Indigenous people.​

A healthy brain? Conversation about mental health

Mental health plays an important role in a person's health and wellbeing. Young adults are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. Between 2020-22, 38.8% of people aged 16-24 experienced a mental health episode within 12 months. In that same period, 26% of people aged 16-24 experienced high or very high psychological distress.

What is Mental Health Month?

Mental Health Month is observed annually in Australia during October. The entire month serves as an encouragement to think deeply about personal mental health and wellbeing, regardless of lived experiences.

What is a human library?

A human library is a library of people serving as books to be borrowed and have conversations. Every human book represents a group of society that is subject to prejudice and stigma bringing their personal stories to share. The goal for the human library is to build a safe haven for people to have open conversation about difficult topics without judgement. 

Event outline

As part of Azure Beach Council's vision of encouraging connections, collaborations and partnerships, Azure Beach Library has organised a Human Library event in partnership with the Human Library Organisation. In the event, there will be three books sharing their experience with mental health issues. Readers will have 20 minute sessions to discuss, listen and ask questions surrounding mental health. The goal of the event is to cultivate a positive environment in the Azure Beach community about sharing mental health struggles, creating healthy brains along the way.

Throughout the event, it will be strongly encouraged people becomes allies through the Mental Health Month website.

Multicultural Connect – A Human Library Event!

In celebration of Harmony Week, Azure Beach Library is hosting a human library event with the theme – Multicultural Connect!

During the event people may come and 'borrow' a human book for up to 15 minutes. Our human 'books' are people who have come to Australia from another country, including China, Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, India, Argentina and Iran.

Come along and chat to a person from a different country to learn about their life and culture, and maybe practice or even learn some new language skills.

This event is a wonderful opportunity to value, respect and connect with our amazingly multiculturally diverse community.

Join us for Harmony week this year as we celebrate our diverse community through our Human library event “Connecting the past, present & future: promoting harmony through conversations”. All around the country, Australians will be celebrating the beauty of multiculturalism so why not come do the same? Have a chat with members of your local community from a diverse range of backgrounds and create conversations that celebrate what this country has to offer. Feel free to ask questions about their experiences, their foods and their hopes and expectations of this wonderful land. Wondering what a human library is? It’s exactly what it sounds like! Each “human” acts as a book, where you can “borrow” them and hear about their wonderful experiences, their challenges and their dreams of life in Australia.

About the event:

Azure Beach Library has created this event in collaboration with the Human Library Organisation in which there will be four humans (or “books”), with 20 attendees (or borrowers) each session.
