SMASH and LEARN: an eWaste Workshop

Have you ever thought about pulverising a computer with a hammer? Do you want to be told it's 100% ok to smash a phone? Do you want to break things and learn at the same time?

Good News!

Azure Beach Library is hosting its first ever SMASH and LEARN! As part of this year's International Youth Day, we're partnering with out council waste management service to bring you computers and smartphones that you're not only allowed to break, it's encouraged!

While you take a hammer to computer screens, our local TAFE's resident electrical engineer will take you through want parts go together to make them tick. While you smash a smartphone into tiny bits, a waste management specialist will tell you what those bits are made of, and how you can dispose of them safely and responsibly.

According to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, The Environment and Water (DCCEEW), Australians generate about 22 kilos of eWaste per capita - more than double the global average. By 2030, national total eWaste is projected to hit 657,000 tonnes. This workshop will teach you how to recognise eWaste and help minimise its impact on the environment, all while learning how computers work in the first place.

Great, so when can I BREAK THINGS?

When: Tuesday 12/08/2025, 5:00pm - 6:00pm

Where: Azure Beach Library, Cove Meeting Room

Provided: Personal Protective Equipment, Tool Hire, and loads of eWaste you can SMASH
