Unity From Diversity - Let's Bridge Worlds For Australia Day

Image created in Canva

Australia Day serves as a celebration of our nation's vibrant diversity. There is power in forming unity from this diversity, since we all collectively contribute a wealth of knowledge, culture, and prosperity to Australia.

We invite everyone to join us before Australia Day in a special human library event, where we will bridge your world to another through the stories shared by 4 diverse living 'books'.

These 'books' are:

Larry A Gumbaynggirr elder, whose story speaks to First Nations' enduring connection to the land and Australia's complex history.
Image from Adam Jones

Aisha A refugee from Syria, whose story highlights resilience and hope for those seeking sanctuary in Australia.
Image from UN Women Europe and Central Asia

Sally A second-generation Chinese Australian, whose story demonstrates the impact of generational changes in Australia.
Image from Ai Yah

Edmund An immigrant from the United Kingdom, whose story brings up experiences shaped by migration and adaptation.

Where: The forecourt of Azure Beach Library

Booking information:

A human library is an event or initiative where real people, referred to as "books," share their personal stories, experiences, and knowledge with others in a one-on-one or small group setting. It promotes dialogue, empathy, and understanding by breaking down stereotypes and fostering connections between diverse individuals.

This event aims to have people in the Azure Beach community "borrow" the surprise guest speakers and have people in the community ask these "books" appropriate questions about their experiences as refugees. This event will be held for World Refugee Day which is on the week of the 20th of June.

A World of Stories

A World of Stories

We are surrounded by people of all walks of life and backgrounds.

In acknowledgement of Refugee Week - June 16th - June 22nd - and in partnership with The Human Library Organisation, Azure Beach Public Library is proud to present 'A World of Stories', our first human library event.

"Refugee Week is Australia’s annual activity to inform the public about refugees and celebrate positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society." - Refugee Council of Australia

📅Date:Thursday 20th June 2024, 1pm - 4.30pm
🏦Where: Azure Beach Public Library - Courtyard
🎫Book your session here
☎ Enquiries: Call us at (02) 1234 5678

The concept of a human library differs from other physical forms of library materials because the books in a human library are humans who can share their stories with users.

We will provide a safe space for ‘readers’ to speak and learn informally with a human ‘book’. Our ‘books’ are members of the local community and have experienced prejudice and discrimination during their lives because of their gender, appearance, culture, or religion.

You can ‘check out’ one of our volunteers for 20-25 minutes to talk and learn about their lives. Come have a conversation one-on-one with people from all over the world who have come to our country and community to seek a new life and the opportunities we are able to provide.

Light refreshments will be available.

About this event!

Azure Beach Library is celebrating Harmony Day with a Human Living Library event. This event is about Australian cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

We invited 3 “books” with different cultures to provide their experience in Australia. They share the difficulties and challenges they have in the daily life as they have different cultures and how they face these challenges.

The borrowers will be able to “borrow” the books and have a conversation, ask questions, share experiences, challenge their mindsets

What’s a Human Library?

The Human Library uses a method of dialogue to offer people the opportunity to meet other people that they don’t normally meet and to have conversations about topics that people often don’t get the chance to talk about (from human library Australia).

What is a Human Library?

The Human Library is an idea first started in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000.

It aims to address people's prejudices by helping them

to talk to those they would not normally meet

with the objective being to 'unjudge someone'.

Human book from our multi-culturally diverse community,

supported by a facilitator and a library staff member,

will share their stories in a relaxed setting with plenty of time for questions and reflections.

What is a human library?

It's a movement that aims to address people's prejudices by helping them to talk to those they would not normally meet. It uses a library analogy of lending people rather than books. It started in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2000, and is now being adopted by libraries in Australia.

At the human library, you can ask all these and more (well maybe not the last one).
Interested? Be sure to book, places fill up fast!
