Dementia Connect: Caring Together

Dementia Connect: Caring Together

An Unmissable Human Library Event on Dementia

Borrow a Human Book at the Azure Beach Public Library on Saturday 23 September at 11.00 am to 2.00 pm. Have a 20 minute conversation and see life from a different perspective.

Dementia is the second leading cause of death for all Australians and 2 in 3 people with dementia are thought to be living in the community. Dementia patients and their carers in Azure Beach would benefit from the Human Library Event planned for Dementia Action Week 2023.

What is a human library?

The Human Library® creates a safe space for dialogue where topics are discussed openly between our human books and their readers. To learn more visit, https://humanlibrary.org

Six Human Books shared by people living with dementia and their working carers would provide an immersive reading experience to step into their shoes, understand what dementia is, the role of a young carer, their daily challenges, as well as have a space to chat with them and listen to their stories.

Destigmatize Dementia at our Human Library Event

Did you know that in 2023, it is estimated there are more than 400,000 Australians living with dementia?

That is why at Azure Beach Library we are holding a Human Library event in partnership with the Human Library Organisation to educate the community members of Azure Beach about dementia.

The event will give community members the chance to speak with the people closest to dementia sufferers. Their carers, their friends and their family members. Our patrons will be able to borrow these “living books” for up to 20 minutes at a time to discuss, educate, share and debunk the common myths and hurtful stereotypes surrounding dementia sufferers.

Dementia Action Week 2023 Human Library Event

Dementia Action Week 2023 Human Library Event

As part of Dementia Action Week 2023, Azure Beach Public Library, partnered with Dementia Australia, is hosting a Human Library event where you can borrow  Human “Books" to have an informal conversation. We have invited four Human “books” who share their stories with others in a safe environment. It is an opportunity for you to connect with people they would not normally have the occasion to speak to within their community, to better understand the life experiences of others and to challenge their own assumptions, prejudices and stereotypes.  Each of our human “books” can be borrowed for up to30 minutes for you to listen to their stories and learn what they know.

How about a date with a good book?
