Do you know? 

Australia's Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders are one the oldest continuous civilizations on earth, and that is why we need pay more care to protect them. 

With hundreds of cultural groups, clans, 600 dialects, and 250 languages, but only make up approximately 3.3% of Australia's population today. 

 

Why we do?

This initiative aims not only to foster communication and exchange among our community members but also to demonstrate our commitment to Indigenous culture. 

What we do?

In preparation for Indigenous Literacy Day, Azure Beach Public Library plans to host a Human Library event. During this event, we will invite various "Human Books" to share their personal stories about Indigenous culture with the audience in one-on-one sessions

Indigenous Literacy Day - Sept 9^th-10^th 2023

About the event

Azure Beach Library is celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day with a two-day event solely focussed on indigenous culture.  We are offering members of the public the opportunity to come on site and speak to our “Human Book” officials about Literacy within Indigenous Australian culture.

Our focus

The importance of harnessing communication and delivering empowerment to Indigenous Australians by having members of the community act as key experienced speakers delivering their historical impact on art and culture through the form of storytelling. This event marks an important time to delve into the ethos of a rich history whilst paving way for further representation for the future.

Human Books

We will have four Human Books on site over the weekend.  Members of the public are encouraged to come on site and request to speak to any individual (for free) for one to one or group meetings to discuss Art, Writing, History and Storytelling. Two of the Human Library team are offering to speak with their native tongue as part of the interactive experience.  Interpreters will be available for these experiences should anyone wish it.

Our aim

The human library experience we hope will have a “Pay it forward” approach so that interactions with the human libraries will provide potential and confidence in others to take part and go on to become the writers that we hear from in the future.

We hope that people enjoy this interactive and celebratory event bringing focus to the community and sharing all of their potential as storytellers.

As we want this to be as an interactive venture – it is not possible to book any of our Human libraries in advance of the event.

First People, First Stories - a Human Living Library Event

Come and borrow a human book to learn from the stories of our Indigenous Australians. Celebrating Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s Indigenous Literacy Day, Azure Beach Public Library will be hosting a Human Living Library event. This year Indigenous Literacy Day is all about Celebrating Stories, Cultures & Languages. Come along to the library, meet the people behind the stories and learn more about their life and culture.

Have you ever been so interested in a story that you want to ask the author or the main character questions as you go? Well, this is your chance to do so. Instead of borrowing a physical book from a shelf, a human living library event allows readers to borrow a person, who will tell you their story in a relaxed environment where you will be able to interact with the “book” and ask questions. This event will be a part of Azure Beach Public Library’s ongoing Human Living Library. Human Libraries are designed to facilitate the sharing of stories, breaking down barriers and forming connections. The Human Library is a global initiative that began in Copenhagen in the year 2000. Since the year 2000 more than 85 countries have published human books through this concept. All human books will be delivered by Indigenous Australians living in New South Wales.

Books will be able to be borrowed on the hour and half hour throughout this three-hour event. Ticket numbers are limited and children under 13 will need to be accompanied by an adult guardian. You've no doubt heard of usual paper books, after all they have existed for thousands of years. You may have been introduced to e-books and audiobooks. 

Behold an exciting new experience coming to Azure Beach Library, a Human Library.

You might be thinking at this moment, "what on earth is a human library?"

Let us briefly explain what it is, just to get you in the loop. Everyone has their own unique story to tell but they might not have the platform to. A human library solves that problem. A group of people which we call human books come in the to the library. There, YOU, yes you, can borrow the book, though you cannot take them home. They will tell you their story, feel free to ask questions, get to know each other. It's all part of human libraries.
