International Youth Day Event: Fast Fashion Fix!

Did you know?

Australians are the second highest clothing consumers in the world and throw away, on average, 23 kilos of unwanted clothing into landfill per person every year! Much of this clothing has been barely worn or, if damaged, needs only minor repairs to become wearable again.

If this sounds like a huge problem, well, you’re right. But there’s good news!

You can make a difference!

Are you between the ages of 15 and 24?

Do you have a favourite piece of clothing that is worn or damaged?

Don’t throw it away!

Bring it along to our special International Youth Day Fast Fashion Fix workshop and learn how you can extend the life of and customise your most loved clothing in a way that makes it uniquely yours!

Our awesome instructors will teach you various visible mending techniques so that you can make repairs that express your creativity and individuality while practising sustainability and reducing consumption in a fun way.

You’ll even get a free mending kit to start you off!

We’ll also give you a quick run-down on how to use Azure Beach Council’s brand new clothes swapping app to give your gently worn items a second chance! It’s a great way to feel the buzz of getting something new in a way that’s more sustainable in the fight against fast fashion!

Sounds great! So where and when is this happening?!

Glad you asked! Event details are as follows:

Date:        Saturday 17th August 2024

Time:        2:00 pm to 3:30 pm

Place:       The Azure Room at Azure Beach Public Library

Coding a Sustainable Future: Free Youth Coding Class

To celebrate International Youth Day on August 12, Azure Beach Public Library will host a FREE class on coding for teens, with a special focus on sustainability. Register for tickets here.

Teens will be encouraged to imagine sustainable futures and then start to build them — whether designing and engineering green cities in sandbox games or creating their own apps to educate about climate change.

A qualified instructor will lead the class, teaching kids fundamentals, encouraging their brainstorms and giving them practical tools to realize their visions on their own.

The class is suitable for beginning coders as well as those with more experience. It is appropriate for youth aged 15–19, though older youth are more than welcome to attend!

This exciting one-off class is in line with the theme of International Youth Day 2024: “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for a Sustainable Future,” and several of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs), including sustainable cities and communities, climate action and quality education.

In addition to encouraging teens’ love of coding, programming and engineering, the class will get them to think about how to link up their problem-solving skills and creativity with their peers around the world in order to envision a sustainable future and make it happen together.

Get Smarter About Your Phone

Royalty-free image from hellolly on Pixabay

Sure, you've got the latest new iPhone ...

But where's your old one?

If you're like most people, it's probably languishing in a drawer, dusty and forgotten. According to the Reconnect Project, there are around "23 million mobile phones sitting unused in drawers, boxes and garages across Australia." Smartphones contain rare, valuable metals and minerals, which no-one wants ending up in landfill. Surely, those old phones could be put to better use!

Bring your old phone to the library,

and we'll connect it with someone in need.

Azure Beach Public Library is partnering with DV Safe Phone, a Queensland-based charity that collects used phones, repairs them, and distributes them to people at risk of domestic violence. Find out more about them here.

But that's not all ...

The 12th of August, 2024 is International Youth Day.

This year's Youth Day is all about promoting
sustainable development through technology.
That's why, on the 12th of August, from 5pm, we'll be hosting a

Library App Information Session and Used Phone Drive.

What's this?

At Azure Beach Public Library, we're not about to bug you to get off your phone. In fact, your phone is the gateway to thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, and videos that you can access for free through your library membership. We'll show you how to install and use each and every one of these apps to their full potential.

We've also invited a spokesperson from DV Safe Phone talk about their work and collect donations - so bring a friend, and as many old devices as you can carry, and learn how to get the most out of your phones - and your library.

What was that date again?

Date: Monday 12th August, 2024

Time: 5:00pm - 6:30pm

Place: Azure Room, Azure Beach Public Library

No need to book - just show up!

So rummage through those drawers and blow the dust off those devices - and once you've dug them out, feel free to post a photo or video of your old phone on socials, and let people know about our event, using the hashtag: #getsmarteraboutyourphone

We hope to see you there!
