Australian Voices: a Human Library event

Australia Day means different things to different people. When you think of Australia Day, do you think of bbq's, fireworks, and a game of footy? To our Indigenous community in Azure Beach, it's not a day of celebration; it's a day that can symbolise colonisation, survival, and mourning. In Azure Beach, we pride ourselves on our diverse community and our strong Indigenous cultural heritage. But how well do you know the stories of your Indigenous neighbours?

At Azure Beach Library next February 3rd, join us for our first ever Human Library event, where you can borrow a human book to learn their story and ask questions you've never had the chance to. Supported by the Human Library Organisation and local Gumbaynggirr Nation elders and community, we invite you to come along and have a yarn.

First People, First Stories - a Human Living Library Event

Come and borrow a human book to learn from the stories of our Indigenous Australians. Celebrating Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s Indigenous Literacy Day, Azure Beach Public Library will be hosting a Human Living Library event. This year Indigenous Literacy Day is all about Celebrating Stories, Cultures & Languages. Come along to the library, meet the people behind the stories and learn more about their life and culture.

Have you ever been so interested in a story that you want to ask the author or the main character questions as you go? Well, this is your chance to do so. Instead of borrowing a physical book from a shelf, a human living library event allows readers to borrow a person, who will tell you their story in a relaxed environment where you will be able to interact with the “book” and ask questions. This event will be a part of Azure Beach Public Library’s ongoing Human Living Library. Human Libraries are designed to facilitate the sharing of stories, breaking down barriers and forming connections. The Human Library is a global initiative that began in Copenhagen in the year 2000. Since the year 2000 more than 85 countries have published human books through this concept. All human books will be delivered by Indigenous Australians living in New South Wales.

Books will be able to be borrowed on the hour and half hour throughout this three-hour event. Ticket numbers are limited and children under 13 will need to be accompanied by an adult guardian. Communities: Old and New, The Human Library

Azure Beach Public Library is bringing back the popular Human Library for 2022 World Refugee Week. To celebrate the opportunities that bring so many here to Australia, four people who moved to Australia for a better life will volunteer their time to tell their stories. This includes:

- A Māori person who moved with their family for a job opportunity

- A newly settled Chinese migrant (with interpreter)

- A Syrian refugee who moved to Australia 5 years ago

- The daughter of a Somali refugee

 Human Libraries are special events where people can go to a library and choose a human "book" to tell them stories about their experiences, life and what brought them to where they are today. The aim is to "unjudge someone" by learning more about them and their life. World Refugee Week 2022 is centered on the theme of "Healing" and the best way to honour that is to come together and form relationships and connections with those who have experienced life in a completely different way.

Our “books” are especially excited to share their experiences with Azure Beach’s First Nation peoples as the traditional custodians of the land they now call home. If you are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island origin, we encourage you to come along and share with our “books” your stories!
