Have you ever wanted to know about Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples' connection with the land, family, law, ceremony, and language? These are the Interconnected elements that make up indigenous culture.

The Human Library is designed to challenge stereotypes and prejudice. Through conversation and understanding, it aims to build respectful relationships and communities. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers to hear and learn about their experiences and can share their knowledge (humanlibrary.org).

In partnership with NAIDOC week, Azure Beach Library is proud to present its first Indigenous Human Library. We will have available to borrow, 10 human books. Each book will share with you an Interconnected element. You will spend 15 minutes with your borrowed book where you can have a conversation.

Come to the library, borrow a book, and learn about interconnection at the Azure Beach Library. Books available to borrow:

Open Like a Book

What is a Human Library, it provides someone with an opportunity to meet someone different and learn about these people experiences regarding their gender, race, sexual orientation and many more. Think of this person like a library book, they're open to providing information about these topic that are apart of their every day life. More information can be found Here

Naidoc week celebrates the culture and history as well as the achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This is held every year on the first week of July and  provides a chance for people to learn more about this vibrant culture. More information can be found here

So we invite everyone to our Human library event 'Open like a Book' on the 8th of July to celebrate Naidoc Week. We are gonna have 10 people from the Aboriginal community come in and tell us about their personal life experiences and their family history. This event will be held in Azure Beach library within the courtyard on Sunday the 3rd of July at 12 AM and you can register for a ticket on Eventbrite.

What is a human library?
The Human Library is an event where people are loaned to readers for personal conservation. These people are volunteers and they are called 'books'. These 'books' have personal experiences and can answer questions from readers to challenge stereotypes and prejudice about a topic. The loan duration of a 'book' can last up to 30 minutes and there is an age limit where readers under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. The purpose of a Human Library is to challenge stereotypes and prejudice through conservation.

For further information please visit: https://www.humanlibraryaus.org/

This event will use the Human Library concept and NAIDOC Week to educate the community about Indigenous history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The 'books' will share their stories with the readers and this is an opportunity to spread their knowledge and experiences and allow the readers to understand their identity.

For further information please visit:
https://www.naidoc.org.au/

Our Books are:
1. A community elder who will talk about Indigenous history and culture.
2. An Indigenous sports person who will talk about her achievements.
3. An Indigenous person from the Azure Beach Writers group who will tell his Indigenous stories that he has created while in the writers group.
4. A young Indigenous person who speaks about what she wants to see in the future for Indigenous people.
