Human Library Event
National Diabetes Awareness
Did you know? Diabetes is a chronic condition and there are currently 1.8 million Australians living with diabetes. The main types of diabetes are type 1, type 2 and gestational.
It's good to have an understanding of this condition, awareness of the symptoms and effective management. National Diabetes Week
Have you ever had any questions or heard any myths about diabetes? Then come along to our human living library event to find out the facts.
What is a Human Library?
It is a safe space where our human book volunteers share their personal experiences. Attendees can borrow a human book and hear their stories and ask questions. This event is to make people feel comfortable talking about diabetes and dissolve any stigmas that they may have about this topic.
Our Human Books will share their stories:
- What it is like to live day to day with diabetes.
- The different types of diabetes.
- Living with diabetes throughout childhood and into adulthood.
- What is involved in looking after someone with diabetes.
Our Books will be:
Joan- I got diabetes as a kid.
Ted- I care for my elderly mother who has diabetes.
Sally- I didn't get diabetes until I was 55.
Andrew- My best friend has type 2 diabetes.
Angela- I had gestational diabetes with both my pregnancies.
Daniel- I have type 1 diabetes.
