The TCK Experience Human Library Event

come on a journey around the world with...

The TCK Experience!

 HUMAN LIBRARY EVENT

~ Tuesday 21st March ~
at
~ Azure Beach Public Library~

What is a TCK?

TCK stands for ‘third culture kid.’ A TCK is someone who grew up in a country or culture that is different to their parent’s home culture. Because of their experience growing up being exposed to two different cultures – their parent’s culture and the culture of the country they are living in – the culture they identify with ends up being a mix of both, a separate ‘third culture.’

What to Expect?

In accordance with Harmony Week to celebrate our community's cultural diversity, Azue Beach Public Library is holding a human library event. This is an event where participants can check out a human library book, or in other words, set aside some time to have a converstion with a volunteer about a topic they have significant experience in. The aim is to start interesting and engaging conversations that people would typically avoid. Our event is themed around the many cultures and experiences that come with being a TCK in Australia.
Come and sit down with one of our 8 TCK human library books and have a conversation. This is an opportunity to learn about some of the different cultures that are a part of your community. Do you want to learn about the culture they grew up in? Perhaps you are interested in their unique cultural identity, or the struggles that come along with that. Bring any questions you may have and enjoy the conversation that follows.

What's Your Story?

What's Your Story?

“To be called a refugee is the opposite of an insult; it is a badge of strength,                                                                 courage and victory.”

Tennessee Office for Refugees

The week of March 15th–21st is Harmony Week. It is a chance to honour the resilience and bravery of people who have had to leave their own country due to violence or persecution.

Azure Beach Library has the great privilege of hosting a Human Library event. It's a straightforward idea—refugees from the local community will volunteer to act as "human books,"   you  may then "borrow" one to "read," which essentially means to engage in conversation with them.

Human Library project (https://humanlibrary.org/) which uses discussion to overcome prejudice and preconceptions, is where the idea came from. Each "human" book includes a synopsis of the author's experiences, one item that could surprise readers, an instance of prejudice they've encountered, and their beliefs.

Let's start the Conversations!

WHEN: MONDAY, 21/03/22

TIME: 10AM-11AM

VENUE: AT THE LIBRARY IN THE SMALL SEATING AREAS ON THE GROUND FLOOR

Bonds formed through love

What is a human Library?

A human library is a library event where you are able to learn and hear about peoples first hand experiences (as if they were a book you were checking out from the library). You can 'borrow' these human books and have one on one conversations with them during the event.

Bonds formed through love

Azure Beach Public Library is hosting this event in recognition of Social Inclusion Week. Adoption can often come across with mixed messages, some that are positive and some that are negative and the process can be complex.

By attending this event you will be informed on how adoption works in Australia, the benefits of adopting, the different types of adoption and have an opportunity to ask questions and learn more.

This event will have a specialist from Family and Community Services (FACS) and discussions with two families speaking about their experiences with adoption. Talking and learning from these stories will be educational and enlightening.

Places are limited please RSVP to attend.
