About the event

Once again Azure Beach library visitors will be able to borrow a real person(Human Book) with a unique story to share. Human Books are volunteers from stigmatized groups in the community who are willing to share their stories with others. In December, celebrating International Day of People with Disability, Azure Beach library will host its final Human Library event on the theme of Disability.

Around 1 in 6 (18%) people in Australia – or about 4.4 million – have disability.

The Human Library® is an internationally recognised event that facilitates conversations between people who would not normally have the occasion to speak to each other. It aims to break down stereotypes and prejudices by having "human books" tell their stories and "readers" have conversations with them. If you want to learn more about the Human Library, please visit https://humanlibrary.org/.

Destigmatize Dementia at our Human Library Event

 

Did you know that in 2023, it is estimated there are more than 400,000 Australians living with dementia?

That is why at Azure Beach Library we are holding a Human Library event in partnership with the Human Library Organisation to educate the community members of Azure Beach about dementia. 

The event will give community members the chance to speak with the people closest to dementia sufferers. Their carers, their friends and their family members. Our patrons will be able to borrow these “living books” for up to 20 minutes at a time to discuss, educate, share and debunk the common myths and hurtful stereotypes surrounding dementia sufferers.

Human Library Event

What type of world do you want to leave behind for your children and grandchildren and beyond?

Azure Beach Public Library is hosting a human library event for World Environmental Day where you can speak to four "human books" with expertise on the threat of human made climate change and how desertification affects our country and what we can do about it to make a difference for the future.

Dr Anika Molesworth is a farmer and a scientist who is an expert on sustainable land management practices.

Greg Mullins is a former Commissioner of Fire and Rescue NSW, and the author of the book Firestorm, who has seen firsthand the ravaging affects of climate change on our fragile country.

Jessica Murray is a farmer from regional NSW who says that, "farmers will lead the way to a better future".

Bob Brown is a former politician turned environmentalist who fights for a better future.

If you have questions or concerns about climate change, this is the place to get the facts and find out what you can do to help the people you love live in a better world than the one we will leave them behind if we do nothing.

Unjudge Homeless People

    On any given night, 122,494 people in Australia are experiencing homelessness according to the 2021 Australian Bureau of Statistics.

    The situation rapidly deteriorated in 2023 with a national housing crisis as more people have been driven out of their homes because of skyrocketing rents.

    Homeless stigmas are stereotyped.

    “They sleep on the street at their own choices.” “They are lazy, don’t want to work, dirty, scam artists, drug addicts, violent criminals, disabled, physically or mentally ill.” 

    “They deserve homelessness.”

 

    Our “book” is a rideshare driver, homeless, immigrant, and refugee. He is a 5-star Uber driver, working 10-12 hours daily. His customers praised him as “polite, easy going, and made respectful conversation.”  

    

    Driving around and sleeping in his car at night makes him an acquaintance of many other homeless people who have suffered from prejudices and discrimination. 

    Homeless women are mostly victims of domestic violence. Homeless children often suffer from extreme levels of distress, low self-esteem, depression, and behavioural problems. Often, they are discriminated against by classmates and eventually will drop out of their schools.

    Through ABPL human library, our human book and ABPL hope to destigmatise homelessness and make the audiences become informed and more sympathetic citizens.

    The simple message: “Give homeless people a second chance to stand up again.”    Two homeless drivers will be “books” at the event.

to Domestic Violence

In NSW, there are approximately a monthly reported cases of 2,500 related to domestic violence, and this likely to only representing 40% of actual incidents due to underreporting (NSW Council of Social Services NCOSS, 2020).

In relation to this, Azure Beach Public Library is hosting a Human Library event to create awareness and promote a clear message of no tolerance of domestic and family violence in Azure Beach community.  We are targeting people from all walks of life and gender to participate in this event.

Human Library is an event where real people (“book”) are on loan to readers for a personal conversation.  Azure Beach Public Library has invited 3 “books” who were the victims of domestic violence, and willing to share their stories on how they survive and move on.  For this event, you could spend a 20-30 minutes session with the book of your choice.

Challenging Stereotypes - Refugee Week

When you think of refugees, do you see beyond stereotypes? Often, we imagine them only as victims or cultural clashes; but the fact is, most refugees are resilient, contribute to the community, and add to our cultural diversity.

Exciting news:

Azure Beach Public Library is hosting a Human Library Event for Refugee Week! Engage in insightful dialogue sessions as you "borrow" six human books of refugees, challenging stereotypes and understanding their journeys. Each book “borrow” session is 20 mins.

Let’s meet our human books:

• Aduc: Escaped Sudan's civil war, now a nurse and interpreter in Australia.

• Daniel: Ethiopian university teacher turned Australian permanent resident.

• Jean: Burundi to Australia via a Tanzanian refugee camp, TAFE student.

• Natalie Lobastov JP: Former Russian refugee, 2018 Australian of the Year nominee.

• Nazifa Ali: Afghanistan to Australia, bilingual community educator.

• Yuol Akoy Yuol: Fled Sudanese civil war, aspiring student at Charles Sturt University.

 Connecting Through Shared Mental Health Journeys

A human library event for Mental Health Month.

Azure Beach is committed to promoting mental health awareness, particularly among today's youth, acknowledging the increasing prevalence of mental health challenges each year.

At our upcoming event, we're offering 5 individuals as "human books", each sharing personal stories and insights about their mental health journeys. Attendees are welcome to borrow these human books for a few minutes, listening and learning from their experiences and advice. 

Through this initiative, we aim to educate the community about the nuances of mental health struggles and offer techniques that foster positive mental wellbeing.
We're looking forward to seeing you all there!
