Everyone suffers from mental health; the Australian Bureau of Statistics state that in 2022, youth are the generation to undergo the most psychological distress.

Azure Beach Public Library have dedicated to address mental health within our community through informative and helpful programs supported by professionals. Show up and we will share our professional resources and provide therapeutic outlets in a stress-free environment.

What you’ll do:

• Hear from professional staff from Azure Beach Hospital Mental Health Unit.
• Learn techniques for healthy self-talk and how to re-centre yourself during stress. This can apply to study and/or personal stress.
• Fun, relaxing art programs with a take home kit!

With this program, you aren’t expected to share your experience. Together, we will be in a supportive environment in which we can benefit from de-stigmatising mental health across the youth generations and learn how to combat mental health in a constructive manner. Your story starts here.

Azure Beach Public Library will be holding a Human Library event that will be held during Refugee Week. This event is designed to honour the multicultural community of Azure Beach and to provide a better understanding of the issues affecting refugees. 

What is a Human Library? 

A Human Library is designed to create conversation with human 'books' who come from stigmatised groups, subcultures or communities. You, the 'reader' will be able to borrow a book for up to 30 minutes and participate in an open conversation about their chosen topic. 

As Azure Beach is a Refugee Welcome Zone for people from Afghanistan, Iran and Syria we will have a refugee book representing each culture as well as an Aboriginal book.

"Let’s Talk" – Celebrating Refugee Week 2022

Come borrow a “Human Library Book” 

What is a Human Library? A Human Library in made up of "books", that is volunteers who give their time speak to others about their lives and experiences to you the "borrowers". 

To celebrate Refugee Week 2022, Azure Beach Library has invited 3 refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iran to the library to tell of their past struggles, hardships and triumphs.

How did they came to be in Azure Bay?

What is it like to flee your country in the middle of the night? 

Did you have to leave your friends and family behind?

What are you doing now?

You could also explore issues surrounding refugee rights in Australia with Kathy our "Human Library Book"from the Azure Beach Social Justice Group. 

When: Saturday, 25th June 2022 

Time: Book a 20 minute session between 2 - 4 pm

Common ground - "Connection through conversation, inclusion through understanding" - Human Library Event

This Harmony week come in and borrow a Human book, have a conversation and find your own common ground.

About this Event

To coincide with Refugee Week at Azure Beach, the public library will be hosting a 'Human Library' event, to encourage connections amongst the community members from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Attendees can engage in private conversations with members of the community who are refugees, or have recently migrated to Australia, and have volunteered to share their experiences, and talk about their lives before and after coming to Australia. The conversations will largely be one-on-one, and will go for around 20-30 minutes.

We hear about them on the news, read about them online and of late, see them on the streets of Azure Beach, Pearl Cove...our neighborhoods. 

Azure Beach Public Library, through the revolutionary and visionary idea of the Human Library, are bringing living books to you. 

Yes, books that you can 'borrow' and ask any burning questions you might have...You ask, they answer...they want you to know why? When? How?

These books have endured first hand what leaving your home country is like, in the middle of the night, after hiding in a basement for weeks on end. They have overcome unimaginable obstacles and challenges to become free, safe and what we call a refugee. 

Some of these books are Australians, but of Islamic faith, that have been called terrorists, oppressors of women, fundamentalists...

Now, you have the opportunity to ask them about the truth, about their point of view. Changing the World can be real, starting with one conversation at a time...

About this event!

Azure Beach Library is celebrating Harmony Day with a Human Living Library event. This event is about Australian cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

We invited 3 “books” with different cultures to provide their experience in Australia. They share the difficulties and challenges they have in the daily life as they have different cultures and how they face these challenges.

The borrowers will be able to “borrow” the books and have a conversation, ask questions, share experiences, challenge their mindsets. 

What’s a Human Library?

The Human Library uses a method of dialogue to offer people the opportunity to meet other people that they don’t normally meet and to have conversations about topics that people often don’t get the chance to talk about (from human library Australia).

Ever wondered about why your neighbour does what they do but been too timid to ask? Maybe they have a unique way of styling themselves and you want to know how they do it and what it represents. Or they eat certain foods and avoid other ones. Maybe they practise a different religion to you that you know very little about.

Join us for a two-hour Human Library event that will challenge stereotypes and prejudices about your neighbour through dialogue. It will be Social Inclusion Week and Azure Beach Public Library would like to shine a spotlight in breaking down barriers with our increasingly diverse community. Ask one of the 30 human book volunteers from China, Syria, India, Iran, Afghanistan, New Zealand, the UK, and our own Indigenous community what you’ve been curious about from their culture – don’t be shy, there couldn’t be a safer place to do so.

Scam Awareness Week

14.11-20.11.2022 

People who got scammed often feel uncomfortable to talk about what happened but it’s important to have this conversation in order to help others and stop them from falling victims to scam. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, it can happen to anyone. Scams can be very sophisticated and it can be hard to recognise them.

So what is scam?

According to the Collins dictionary a scam is an illegal trick, usually with the purpose of getting money from people. 

Come and join us in the library to learn about various scams and how to recognise them at our Human Library event.

What is human library?

Human Library is interactive program during which you can borrow a “human book” and have a conversation with them about their experience for 30 minutes. This concept first started in Denmark in 2000 and run for 8 hours with more than 50 “human books”.
