"Where Pride Began: Meet the 78ers!" Human Library event

Who are the 78ers?

The 78ers are a group of original LGBTQIA+ protesters from the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade held on the 24th of June 1978. At the time, Sydney had the most visible gay and lesbian community in the country, but they a remained criminalised and socially stigmatised community. In Paddington and Kings Cross, an estimated 2000 people marched for their liberation, mobilising out of the bars and into the streets. Emboldened by the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York, this group of protesters became the vanguard for the LGBTQIA+ rights movement in Australia. Come speak to a 78er to learn about the history and ongoing movement for LGBTQIA+ rights in Australia at this event.

What is the Human Library?

Leading with their motto "unjudge someone" The Human Library is a global organisation designed to foster and facilitate connection and conversations with people across diverse cultural, social, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Participants volunteer their time as Human Books to engage in dialogue on their diverse personal experiences, speaking on uncomfortable and sometimes taboo topics. For this event, 78ers volunteer themselves as Human Books.

Human Book conversations for this event will run in 20 minute group sessions with one Human Book to a group of three patrons.
